ASAP Illinois Eczema

Eczema is the most common chronic skin disease of young children with 17% of US schoolchildren experiencing it.

What is eczema?

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is recurrent inflammation of the skin that can be associated with food or environmental allergies. It can also be associated with physical irritants like sweat and cold/dry weather. It is thought to occur because of problems in the function of the skin as a barrier.

How do I know I have eczema?

The following symptoms are associated with eczema or atopic dermatitis
Red skin
Scaly patches
Blisters that ooze
Intense itchy skin
Thickened skin
Scratch marks or excoriations
Very dry skin
In older children and adults, rash will occur on the insides of the elbows and behind the knees

Why I should see an allergist for eczema?

Your allergist can help identify triggers that may be worsening the eczema. The allergist can also help manage the rash and the itching. Guidance can also be provided on how to properly take care of the skin without using presciption medications.

Common ways to treat eczema

Avoiding allergic triggers is a great way to treat and prevent eczema. Following a good skin care routine and using prescription medication to help control itching and flares can be very helpful.
